Tuned mass dampers help FORTiS™ encoders achieve class-leading vibration resistance

Machine tools produce significant vibration during operation and high levels of machine vibration can adversely affect the measurement accuracy of enclosed position encoders installed on these machines.

The quality of axis position measurement can directly impact aspects of process quality, such as feature accuracy and surface finish. Moreover, the effects of machine tool vibration can be severe when its frequency is close to the resonant frequency of the encoder, resulting in a large resonant response that can cause the encoder to miscount and fail.

FORTiS encoders are the only enclosed encoder on the market to feature integrated tuned mass dampers (TMDs) that deliver outstanding vibration resistance. The FORTiS encoder TMDs improve positional stability, especially at the encoder's resonant frequency, and enable continuous operation in high vibration environments.

In the following white paper, it has been shown that FORTiS encoders provide good positional stability and reliable operation, whilst being exposed to a wide range of vibration amplitudes across an appropriate band of frequencies.
